WASHINGTON (DC News Now)- DC News Now tracks the prices of 10 staples at grocery stores in the DMV, including Walmart, Giant and Safeway.
Safeway saw the most price increases compared to one month ago, particularly on brown eggs and chicken breast. Walmart was the cheapest option, although prices for wheat bread and boneless pork chops rose. Giant prices remained stable with moderate increases.
We analyzed the cost of our entire grocery list at Costco. Because many of the items only are available in much higher volumes online, we compared unit pricing. (We excluded brown rice, as pricing wasn’t available online.) The total list cost was $29.13 at Costco.
Of the remaining outlets, our list’s price was cheapest at Walmart ($27.98), followed by Giant ($33.83) and Safeway ($44.33).
