(NewsNation) — Gregory Bovino has been relieved of his position as Border Patrol commander-at-large and will be returning to El Centro.
It follows Border Patrol agents being put back on standby in Minnesota despite earlier reports that agents under Bovino would be leaving after Monday.
Border czar Tom Homan is heading to Minneapolis and will meet with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Tuesday.
Homan will also be at the helm of ongoing fraud investigations in the state, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt.
On social media Monday, Trump said he and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz had a “good call” about Homan’s arrival: “The Governor, very respectfully, understood that, and I will be speaking to him in the near future. He was happy that Tom Homan was going to Minnesota, and so am I!”
The pair were on a “similar wavelength” about the move, Trump said, adding, “both Governor Walz and I want to make it better!”
Bovino’s removal from the position comes two days after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, who was shot by a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis on Saturday.
California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom responded to the change, via X, saying, “Now do Stephen Miller,” referencing the Homeland Security Advisor.
