WASHINGTON COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Passionate volunteers in Washington County have devoted countless hours to support the candidate whom they want to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate.
Both the Angela Alsobrooks and Larry Hogan campaigns are backed by an army of grassroots volunteers connecting with those casting a ballot this fall.
At the Democratic Party headquarters in Hagerstown, party leader Paul Pittman said, “We have a lot of volunteers coming forward right now. Yesterday we had over 40-some volunteers going door-to-door.”
Across town at the Washington County GOP headquarters, volunteers said they are motivated by frustration that some important issues in Washington are going unaddressed.
“I think a lot of people have a lot of concerns about what’s going on right now in our country, in our state, in the District. Things like what’s going on with our economy. I see the economy decline, the unsafe nature of the border,” said Lonnie Rogers.
Patrick Shaheen works with the GOP volunteers.
“Larry Hogan is someone who’s represented Maryland for a while,” says Shaheen. “He has a background of accomplishments.”
Across the aisle, one Alsobrooks supporter pointed out a specific difference she has with Hogan. Karen said she was unhappy with his veto of a bill to expand access to abortions performed not just by physicians, but also by physicians’ assistants, nurse practitioners and midwives.
“He passed on the funding,” Karen said. “He did everything he could to subvert it.”
In these weeks leading up to the election, these volunteers will continue to work the phones, knock on doors and make the case for their candidate to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate after current Sen. Ben Cardin retires.
