LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) — The stage is set for a special election for the seat of Virginia State Senate District 32.
The seat will be vacated by Congressman-elect Suhas Subramanyam (D), who was elected to replace Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (D, VA-10) next term. He defeated GOP candidate Mike Clancy.
Democrats chose State Delegate Kannan Srinivasan (D, HD-26) in a firehouse-style primary. Srinivasan garnered 2,698 of the 6,065 votes. He is a member of the Virginia Medicaid Board.
Republicans chose Tumay Harding, an education activist.
“Together, we will win this election, flip the Senate, and usher in a new pro-family, pro-business majority that will ensure Virginia reaches new heights,” Harding wrote on X.
The winner of the seat will determine control of the state senate. If Harding wins, the chamber will be evenly split, and Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Sears will have the tie-breaking vote.
The special election will be held on Jan. 7, 2025.
