Rep. Bob Good (R-Va.) will officially step down as chair of the House Freedom Caucus by the end of this week, a member and source familiar told The Hill, putting a bookend on the Virginia Republican’s tenure in the top job.
The sources said the Freedom Caucus board hopes to have a name for the next chair by Friday. His tenure was supposed to run through December 2025.
The timeline for Good’s departure — and his impending successor — became public after the hardline conservative group huddled behind closed doors on Monday for its weekly meeting, the first since before lawmakers broke for August recess.
The news comes after the Freedom Caucus chair lost his primary to Republican John McGuire in July, then fell short in the race’s recount in August, putting an end to his tenure in Congress.
Good told The Hill earlier on Monday that he informed colleagues he was submitting his resignation as chair of the Freedom Caucus after a recount confirmed his loss.
“Upon my recount being completed on August 2, I had told the board that I was submitting my resignation as chair, effective when the board decided to act upon it,” Good said.
The chairman said he would remain on the Freedom Caucus board and help choose a new nominee for chair of the group, which the board will then present to the general Freedom Caucus membership.
Good — who was first elected to Congress in 2020 — was chosen to serve as Freedom Caucus chair in December, putting him in charge of the influential hardline conservative group that often finds itself at odds with leadership.
Good was a notable choice for the job: the Virginia Republican was one of eight GOP lawmakers who voted to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the top job, and he supported Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in the GOP presidential primary before throwing his support behind former President Trump after DeSantis dropped out.
The Virginia Republican’s support of DeSantis played a role in his demise: the former president endorsed McGuire in the race.
