A man was shot and a 9-year-old girl was grazed by gunfire in a late Friday afternoon shooting outside an Edgewater elementary school, authorities said.
Unknown shooters began firing just outside William C. Goudy Technology Academy on the 5100 block of North Winthrop Avenue just before 3:30 p.m., according to Chicago police.
Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, 48th, said a 45-year-old man was walking to a nearby train stop when he was shot in the arm and ran inside the elementary school for help, where the staff gave him first aid. The school had been dismissed when the shooting took place, she added.
Police said the girl was grazed in the calf and taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good condition, while the man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition.
By 5:30 p.m., police had blocked off two crime scenes just south and east of the school’s playground. At least 14 evidence markers were visible in the cordoned-off area on the 5100 block of North Winthrop Avenue. The second blocked zone, on the 1000 block of West Winona Street, contained at least four more evidence markers.
Manaa-Hoppenworth paced back and forth outside the school, bike helmet in hand. She told reporters that recent shootings had her constituents on edge.
“Whatever the data is saying right now, our neighbors are telling me they are not happy with what feels like an uptick in gun violence,” she said. “Gun violence, period, is unacceptable. Gun violence near a school is outrageous.”
She said she was thankful to the Goudy staff for helping the older shooting victim until medical help arrived and said she’d asked police to boost their presence in the area, particularly with foot and bike patrols.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of Friday evening, police said. Area detectives were investigating.
