A juvenile colossal squid has been caught on video for the first time in its natural deep-sea habitat.
The footage was recorded last month near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean by an undersea drone deployed by the Schmidt Ocean Institute. The squid, measuring about one foot in length, was filmed at a depth of 1,968 feet.
Colossal squids are rarely seen in the wild. Full-grown adults, which scientists have uncovered from the bellies of whales and seabirds, can reach lengths up to 23 feet and weigh up to 1,000 pounds.
