FREDERICK, Md. (DC News Now) — “It was awesome, I’ve never seen anything like that.”
That was the reaction of many who saw the unveiling of the new DaVinci Five robotic-assisted surgical system.
General and bariatric surgeon Natalia Kubicki said this technology is a game changer for patients and surgeons.
“This is a huge benefit to the community because it’s increasing access to robotic surgical care here at Frederick Health, and that’s so exciting for me because it’s going to improve the patient experience,” said Kubicki.
With this new technology, surgeons will be more efficient during surgeries, and patients will experience less pain after surgery and a quicker recovery time, according to Kubicki.
“We make small incisions in the patient, either in the abdomen or in the chest, then we insert instruments in a camera, we attach the robotic arms to those instruments and camera, and then we sit at a console in the room where we have access to the camera and access to the instruments attached to those arms,” Kubicki explained. “We then are guiding those arms to perform surgery.”
People who came to see the unveiling used the machine as if they were surgeons.
Many were amazed by the overall feel and capabilities of the updated technology.
“Being able to sit down and to be able to feel the difference between the non-force feedback, and then the force feedback, it was just really cool to be able to see that innovation,” said Mya Davis.
“All of these benefits are really exciting because they ensure that patients get back to improve quality of life and feeling healthier sooner,” Kubicki noted.
The DaVinci Five can assist in six different types of surgeries as well as emergency surgeries.
