Florida Republican Rep. Carlos A. Gimenez suggested Wednesday that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) should have her “head examined” after she claimed humans can control the weather.
“Humans cannot create or control hurricanes,” Gimenez posted on the social platform X, as Hurricane Milton bore down on his home state. “Anyone who thinks they can, needs to have their head examined.”
Last week, as a number of Southern states began dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Greene wrote on X that “yes they can control the weather.”
“It’s ridiculous for anyone to lie and say it can’t be done,” her post said.
Greene posted a number of other claims over the past several days about the storm being manufactured.
Greene’s post is not the first time the Georgia lawmaker has posted about the weather. In April, she defended her claim online that an eclipse and an earthquake were signs from God telling people to repent.
Hurricane Milton is barreling toward Florida’s west coast. It is expected to make landfall late Wednesday and bring a life-threatening storm surge.
It’s the second large storm to hit in recent weeks, with much of the Southeast still recovering from Helene. The aftermath of that storm sparked a flood of misinformation online, and leaders are sounding the alarm that it’s complicating an already difficult recovery and response process.
Republicans, including former President Trump, have baselessly claimed the government is withholding aid from GOP hurricane victims and redirecting aid to migrants. These claims have been refuted.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency started a “Hurricane Rumor Response” page, where users can see debunked rumors about the agency’s response efforts to both Helene and Milton.
The White House launched a Reddit page with official updates for Hurricane Milton and the Biden administration’s ongoing response and recovery efforts.
The Hill has reached out to Greene for comment.
