The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is searching off the coast of Dana Point for a fisherman who hasn’t been heard from since departing on Tuesday.
The missing man’s father-in-law contacted KTLA Wednesday morning, identifying the fisherman as Matthew Gomez, who was headed toward Catalina Island when he vanished.
The father-in-law said that his daughter woke up around 3 a.m. on Wednesday to find that Gomez had not returned home. She attempted to contact him and then notified the Coast Guard, officials said.
A Coast Guard official told KTLA that Gomez was in an 18-foot vessel, and they’ve had no communication with them.
A helicopter was dispatched around 6 a.m. Wednesday to assist a pair of 45-foot response boats in the search for Gomez. An 87-foot cutter was also deployed, the USCG Los Angeles official said.
KTLA’s Nidia Becerra contributed to this report.
