While former Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley won’t be getting her job back, she’ll remain at the department under a lower rank, officials confirmed.

According to the department, Crowley’s new title is Assistant Chief of LAFD’s Operations Valley Bureau. The Valley Bureau spans the entire San Fernando Valley.

Crowley, the first woman to serve as LAFD’s Chief, was fired by Mayor Karen Bass on Feb. 21 after almost three years in the role.

Bass said the firing was due to Crowley’s response to the Palisades Fire, which torched tens of thousands of acres across the Pacific Palisades and the Santa Monica Mountains and destroyed thousands of structures.

Crowley appealed the dismissal formally at a hearing in front of the L.A. City Council on Tuesday. She needed 10 of the 15 Councilmembers to approve her reinstatement.

Only two voted in favor — ending her bid for reinstatement. Bass was not in attendance.

“Our people do amazing things every single day,” Crowley said during the hearing. “The LAFD, your LAFD, deserves to be properly funded, staffed and resourced so we can meet the growing needs of our community.”
