FREDERICK, Md. (DC News Now) — State lawmakers are weeks away from finishing their legislative session, but some say they are anxious about job cuts to the federal government.
As many as 11,000 Maryland residents working for the U.S. government could be laid off.
Montgomery County Del. Lily Qi (D – 15th District) told community leaders meeting in Frederick County on Monday that the state must be proactive about the job cuts.
“These federal layoffs disproportionately affect a community like Frederick [County] and a Montgomery [County] and the National Capital region,” said Qi. “We need to make sure that our communities are held together in this difficult time.”
Qi said she is also concerned about the potential loss of federal grants and contracts awarded to Maryland-based firms.
