(NewsNation) — A new study found only specific medical cannabinoid products approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have demonstrated benefits for people.
The findings from University of California – Los Angeles Health Sciences revealed specific medications are helpful for patients with HIV/AIDS-related appetite loss, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and severe pediatric seizure disorders.
“Clear guidance from clinicians is essential to support safe, evidence-based decision-making when discussing medical cannabis with their patients,” UCLA Health’s Dr. Michael Hsu said.
The research, which examined 15 years’ worth of clinical trials, meta-analyses and clinical guidelines, also said interest in cannabis and related compounds such as CBD has steadily increased in recent years.
“Patients deserve honest conversations about what the science does and doesn’t tell us about medical cannabis,” added Hsu.
Analysis revealed more than half of medical cannabis users try it for chronic pain, despite clinical guidelines not recommending cannabis-based treatments to deal with pain management.
