A big rig crash left eggs and debris across the southbound 5 Freeway, prompting the closure of nearly all southbound lanes and snarling the morning commute through East Los Angeles Monday.
The crash involving an egg delivery truck was reported around 5:30 a.m. when the trailer apparently clipped the overpass just south of the East L.A. interchange near Indiana Street.
“Quite a mess here,” Rich Prickett said as Sky5 was over the scene at 6:49 a.m. “You can see a portion of the big rig that was completely peeled apart, and as we zoom in here it looks like a company called “Good Eggs.”
A SigAlert was issued as crews worked to clear the wreck. Four lanes were shut down but some traffic was getting by in a single lane as of 6:45 a.m. The closure was expected to remain in place until about 9:45 a.m., the CHP posted on X.
Backup from the crash was causing a major headache for commuters traveling through the area.
“The southbound side is backed up all the way to the 110 Freeway, and that northbound side is seeing some lookie-loo traffic,” Rich said.
