THIS is the dramatic moment tourists are forced to flee as a historic castle crashes to the ground at a Brit holiday hotspot.
A section of the Escalona Castle in Toledo, central Spain, collapsed on Saturday morning in front of terrified onlookers.
Shocking footage shows the moment the 15th-century fortress crumbles after one of its four stone towers gives way.
Large chunks of stone can be seen crashing into the courtyard, with a cloud of dust and debris thrown into the air.
One tourist can be seen fleeing while holding a child as the tower collapses around them.
Once the dust settles, a mountain of rubble can be seen piled at the foot of the palace with bricks seen sprawled across the street.
A number of parked cars were damaged by the tumbling debris but there were no reported injuries.
Following the structural collapse, Civil Guard officers and Town Hall officials arrived to remove the wreckage from the public road.
The authorities cordoned off the area while experts evaluate the extent of the damage.
All planned tourist activities have been suspended pending the review.
Preliminary assessments suggested that recent heavy rainfall in the area may have worsened existing structural weaknesses.
The medieval castle is considered one of the most important in central Spain and was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in February 1922.
Escalona Castle was acquired by the municipality in 2024 after remaining in private hands for several centuries.
It opened its doors to the public on April 26 last year, quickly becoming one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions.
Built in the 15th century by Don Álvaro de Luna, Constable of Castile, it was considered a strategic site during the Reconquista and later Castilian conflicts.
It’s not the only historic tower has collapsed in recent months.
