On the heels of a new Thor-themed Avengers: Doomsday teaser that dropped online today and is now appearing in theaters attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash, the God of Thunder’s adopted brother Loki is weighing in on his involvement in Joe and Anthony Russo’s forthcoming Marvel epic.
In a just-published GQ cover story, Loki actor Tom Hiddleston tells the magazine that he recently finished filming Doomsday, with his chacter picking up from the “glorious purpose” that he found at the end of Loki Season 2 in 2023.
“Glorious Purpose” is, of course, the title of the final episode of Season 2 of the Disney+ series. In it, Hiddleston’s character finds new meaning, becoming the God of Stories and safeguarding the entire multiverse by holding infinite branching realities together. Loki is no longer a trickster, but a protector.
As for Avengers: Doomsday, which premieres December 18, 2026, Hiddleston calls it “monumental.”
He continues, “The center of the story is absolutely brilliant, and was so surprising when I read it. It just has never been done before.”
Today’s Thor character teaser also reveals a new-ish role for Loki’s brother: Father. In it, Chris Hemsworth’s character is pleading not just for victory in battle, but more importantly for a safe return to his daughter, Love, who is played by Hemsworth’s real-life daughter, India. The character first appeared in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
Hiddleston has played the anti-hero across the MCU for more than a decade, starting with 2011’s Thor. He reprised the role in 2012’s The Avengers, 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
The actor’s last big-scrteen appearance as Loki was in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
Loki on Disney+, which premiered in 2021 and ran for two seasons, wrapping its second season in 2023.
Other actors confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday included Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Florence Pugh (Yelena).
The Avengers sequel will also see X-Men stars be part of the MCU for the first time like Patrick Stewart (Charles Xavier / Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast).
Marvel is not only working on Avengers: Doomsday, which is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, but also has planned Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled to release in May 2027.
