A domestic abuse suspect is in custody after barricading himself for hours in a standoff with Santa Barbara deputies on Monday, officials confirmed.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 40-year-old Maurilio Carriedo, who already had three outstanding warrants for his arrest, including felony charges for domestic violence.
Deputies responded around 8:30 a.m. to a domestic dispute that had just been reported on the 4400 block of Hollister Avenue.
However, by the time deputies arrived, Carriedo had already fled to his home.
The sheriff’s office said that before rerouting to Carriedo’s residence, deputies at the scene learned of the man’s three outstanding warrants for felony domestic violence as well as charges for contempt of court, providing false information to a peace officer, possession of a dirk or dagger, possession of a controlled substance and assault with great bodily injury.
Deputies then traveled to Carriedo’s home in the 300 block of Stevens Road, located next to the Santa Barbara Golf Club.
Upon arriving, deputies found that Carriedo had locked himself in what the sheriff’s office described as a “converted garage apartment,” and that he was refusing to come out.
“Deputies spent the following two hours speaking with Carriedo, discouraging him from escalating the situation and encouraging him to surrender peacefully,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.
Then, after 11 a.m., deputies purportedly forced entry and deployed pepperball irritant into the home.
The sheriff’s office said deputies then took Carriedo into custody, but noted that he, as well as some of the deputies, had exposure reactions to the pepperball.
However, there were no significant injuries reported.
Officials booked Carriedo at the Main Jail for felony domestic violence and his outstanding warrants.
The sheriff’s office said he is being held on $185,000 bail.
