(NewsNation) — Voter ID has become a hot-button topic as the White House and congressional Republicans push to pass the SAVE Act.
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told “Katie Pavlich Tonight” that Democrats’ opposition to the legislation reverts back to wanting it to be easy to cheat in elections.
“This is their way of maintaining power,” he said. “They flood Americans with millions of people. They make them dependent on the government.”
On Monday, Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer called the SAVE Act an abomination. The New York Democrat has been vocal about his opposition to the legislation, even characterizing Georgia’s election security law as “Jim Crow 2.0” four years ago.
A majority of states in the country already require would-be voters to prove they are who they say they are, and that they’re legally allowed to cast a ballot. The updated version of the bill would require that people present photo identification before voting. States procure proof of citizenship in person when people register to vote and remove noncitizens from voter rolls.
“These are measures that are supported by 75-80% of the American public on all sides of the political spectrum because Americans don’t want their legitimate vote to be canceled by a fraudulent one,” Johnson added.
“For Chuck Schumer to call this ‘Jim Crow 2.0’ is just ridiculous. That’s an abomination. This is really what Americans want and the least we can expect in terms of election security.”
Asked about regulations for state elections, Johnson was clear he wants states to still be in charge. However, he would like to see basic national standards implemented for them
“Only citizens can vote. That you have voter ID,” Johnson said. “I think we’ve gotten way too loose when it comes to early voting.”
