WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Police in D.C. issued a community warning, advising Washingtonians of the dangers of wearing designer goods while out and about in the District.
Officers say robberies and thefts of some expensive items, specifically designer sneakers, are on the rise and have targeted children and teenagers in several cases.
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) called out a few designer brands in their warning, including Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton, Dior, Amiri and Lanvin, saying those brands are top targets for thieves.
People who spoke with DC News Now on Wednesday said they were surprised to hear the warning.
“That’s a little scary, nobody wants to be told to leave stuff at home,” said Jackson Shyburgh.
“I think in certain areas, it’s probably wise not to walk around with designer,” said Donna Kissling, a long-time Washingtonian. “Sometimes I’ll walk in the street if I have to. I’m just very aware of my surroundings and I never wear headphones.”
Just last week, police say three students were threatened and robbed at gunpoint for their brand-name Balenciaga and Jordan sneakers in Southeast. The thieves got away with more than $1,500 worth of shoes.
MPD Sixth District Commander Jaron Hickman said they’re increasing patrols in areas where they’re seeing those thefts and other violent crimes, making arrests in some cases.
“We’re putting our people where they need to be and responding quickly to crimes in progress. I think that’s been a big contributor here in the 6th District,” said Hickman in an interview with DC News Now on Wednesday. “I also think that as we continue to make arrests in these cases, we’ll see these crimes continue to decrease.”
Police also issued the following tips to help keep people safe:
- Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Always be mindful of who is around you, especially when walking alone or at night. If you notice any suspicious activity, trust your instincts and move to a well-lit or populated area.
- Walk in Groups: Thieves are less likely to target individuals who are walking with others. Encourage your children and teens to walk with friends or family members whenever possible.
- Avoid Displaying High-Value Items: If possible, avoid wearing high-end designer sneakers or other valuable items in public, especially in unfamiliar or isolated areas. Thieves may be watching for opportunities to strike.
- Use Main Roads and Well-Lit Paths: Stick to busy, well-lit streets and avoid shortcuts through alleys or isolated areas. Thieves are more likely to target individuals in secluded areas.
- Be Cautious on Social Media: Discourage youth from posting about expensive items, such as designer sneakers, on social media, especially in real-time. Thieves may use social media to identify potential targets.
- Keep Valuables Secured: If you must carry expensive sneakers or other valuable items, consider carrying them in a secure bag and avoid drawing attention to them.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you or someone you know is approached by individuals acting suspiciously, or if you witness a robbery in progress, contact MPD immediately.
