WASHINGTON (DC News Now) – It’s been a busy winter, and D.C. is cleaning up yet again after another snowy blast hit the city Tuesday afternoon.
Neighbors and crews put their shovels to the pavement Wednesday following the District’s second major snowfall in just the last six weeks.
Northwest neighbor Gary Thomas and a few others got to work clearing snow Wednesday morning in Glover Park.
“It’s above freezing, so the snow’s pretty easy to move around. It’s not too much of a battle like the last snowstorm,” said Thomas.
D.C. homeowners are responsible for clearing their sidewalks promptly after snowfall stops. Julia Macedo is new to the city and told DC News Now she’s grateful Thomas stopped by and offered to help.
“It’s tough, as a working mom, to try and juggle all of the obligations of the morning,” said Macedo. “It’s really nice to have guys in the neighborhood you can pay a few bucks to clear the sidewalks. I can be a good neighbor and still do what I need to get done inside.”
Across the city, along the National Mall, crews got to work early to clear snow around the monuments and memorials. Crews who talked to DC News Now early Wednesday said they started around 3 a.m.
Carlos Farrar with the National Park Service (NPS) doesn’t seem to mind moving that snow off the slippery marble around the Jefferson Memorial. He said he’s going on 36 years with the NPS.
“Just look at them! I was born and raised in the city, so getting to take care of the monuments where I was born, it’s actually a blessing,” Farrar said with a smile, snow blower in tow.
With another wintry mix on the way late Wednesday afternoon, D.C.’s snow emergency remains in effect through the evening. The city asks residents to ensure they aren’t parking their cars along major snow emergency routes, or they could risk being ticketed or towed.
D.C.’s weather rollercoaster continues into Thursday, with more spring-like high temperatures closer to 50 degrees.
