WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for D.C. said a D.C. man was found guilty of hitting and strangling the mother of his child in Southeast on July 4, 2023.
According to an investigation, on July 4, 2023, the victim was hosting a game night where the man, 32-year-old John Brown III, was in attendance. Brown is the father of the victim’s five-year-old son.
After the game night ended, all but one of the victim’s friends left. As the remaining friend was getting ready to sleep on the couch, the victim went to her room and found Brown waiting for her inside.
Brown then started to berate the victim, acting angry towards her because she had had a relationship with one of his friends, even though the two were no longer in a relationship.
That’s when Brown started punching the victim in the face and began strangling her, according to the attorney’s office.
The victim’s friend, who was staying at the home, heard the commotion and ran towards Brown, tackling him. The friend then told the victim to run. She tried to run, but Brown grabbed her ankle.
Brown then hit the victim, which caused her to fall, hit her head and pass out, according to the attorney’s office. He continued to assault the victim even after she woke up.
The victim and her friend were eventually able to escape and call police.
The victim had injuries to her face, neck and the blood vessels in her eye. She was taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.
Brown was ordered by a court to have no contact with the victim, directly or through other people; however, he told family members and friends to reach out to the victim and ask her to drop the charges against him.
According to the USAO, Brown told a friend to inform the victim that he would Cash App her if she dropped the charges.
Brown also asked a family member to reach out to the victim daily to tell her to drop the charges and even went as far as telling his five-year-old son, whom he shares with the victim, to “tell mommy to drop the case so dada can come home.”
Brown was found guilty by a jury of assault with significant bodily injury. He was also found guilty of three counts of obstructing justice and seven counts of contempt for coordinating subsequent coercive outreach in an attempt to discourage the victim’s participation in the court process.
His sentencing is scheduled for May 16, 2025.
