CALVERT COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is investigating after a man from Washington, D.C., died in a crash in Dunkirk on Monday.
According to the sheriff’s office, on Dec. 9, just before 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to a serious single-vehicle crash near MD Route 4 and Cedarwood Lane.
During the course of the investigation, deputies learned that a GMC Yukon was traveling on MD Route 4 near Lysons Creek Road when the crash happened.
According to witnesses and evidence from the scene, deputies said the SUV drifted off the road and crashed into a speed limit sign in a grassy area. Witnesses told deputies that the SUV returned onto the road and began speeding and swerving.
That’s when the GMC crossed over a grassy median near Ashwood Drive and onto the northbound lanes before swerving off the road for a second time. The SUV continued into the grass, where it collided with a tree, according to the sheriff’s office.
The driver, identified as Andrew Francis Evans II, 43, of Washington, D.C., died at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation, but the sheriff’s office said speeding and a possible medical event may have led to the crash.
