Crews with the Los Angeles Fire Department have knocked down grass fires that emerged Friday evening along the southbound 5 Freeway in Elysian Park, a short distance away from Dodger Stadium.
LAFD first reported a grass fire in the area just before 4 p.m. Friday, describing the flames as “slow moving,” burning in medium brush on the side of the highway near the 110 interchange.
At 4:50 p.m., LAFD issued an update on the fire, saying five additional engines were called to help with water supply because the fire “is far from hydrants and accessed via the freeway.”
“A total of 43 firefighters are now on scene, assisted by park rangers,” said LAFD’s update.
Unconfirmed reports said the fires were possibly set by an arsonist in the area.
At 4:47 p.m., LAFD said firefighters achieved full knockdown and containment of the flames along the freeway.
Officials did not provide acreage as of 5:30 p.m.
