Let’s be blunt: movie joints need to find a new way to pipe in the patrons.
A recent article from Variety’s William Earl pondered the question on every film executive’s mind: how do theaters lure back moviegoers? One suggestion: make them marijuana-friendly.
Taking a few puffs or consuming a gummy before walking into a theater is undoubtedly a tradition for many. But what if you could partake inside the theater? That could be coming sooner than you think.
Earl spoke to Taylor Randi Lee, press secretary for the New York State Office of Cannabis Management, who said that the state could soon allow movie theaters to apply for either events permits or consumption lounge licenses, which would let them sell marijuana inside.
Just like bars and alcohol sales inside movie theaters became commonplace several years ago, perhaps a little grass could as well.
Of course, simply allowing patrons to light up in any ole theater would be aggravating to those who don’t want a contact high – but allowing special “420 friendly” showings could spark interest for many.
What do you think? Would you be interested in this new idea to get people to the movies, or would you puff, puff, pass on it?
