(NewsNation) — Luigi Mangione, accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, visited a gun range during a trip to Thailand three months before he visited New York, according to travel companions featured in TMZ’s new “Luigi Mangione: The Mind of a Killer” documentary.
They also claimed Mangione was “obsessed” with the book “Hit Reverse: New Ideas From Old Books” by Indian author Jash Dholani and attempted to buy 400 copies of it.
TMZ’s Harvey Levin speculates that Mangione’s alleged shooting stems from his frustration over “corporate greed.”
“Everyone thinks this assassination was about health insurance,” Levin said Tuesday on NewsNation’s “Banfield,” “that Luigi had a particular grievance about health insurance. It’s not true. Luigi’s gripe was over corporate greed. Health insurance was a symbol of it.”
Mangione faces multiple counts of murder, including murder as an act of terrorism under federal and state charges in New York and Pennsylvania, after allegedly gunning down Thompson as he was walking to an investor conference in Midtown Manhattan on Dec 4.
The federal charges could carry the possibility of the death penalty, while the maximum sentence for the state charges is life in prison without parole. Prosecutors have said the two cases will proceed on parallel tracks, with the state charges expected to go to trial first.
