After a hot Halloween and a heated Election Day (in both senses of the word), New Yorkers can expect temperatures to fall this weekend right alongside some much-needed rain.
The warm weather in New York is forecast to persist throughout Thursday, with sunny skies and highs hovering in the 70s, before temperatures dip to the low 50s overnight. They’ll rebound a bit on Friday, climbing back up to the high 60s just ahead of the weekend cool-off.
“A cold front will move across the area today, allowing temperatures to slowly fall each day through the weekend,” the New York National Weather Service said Thursday. “Conditions will remain dry, with the next chance of rain coming late in the weekend.”
While the sun is slated to stick around on Saturday, temperatures are expected to peak at just 55 degrees and then drop to about 40 overnight. Meteorologists said Sunday will start off mostly the same, with mild temperatures expected for much of the day, albeit without the sunshine. Instead, it will be mostly cloudy throughout the afternoon, with rain showers slated for the evening and night, according to an Accuweather forecast.
The potential precipitation would be a welcome weather change for New York, where residents are have been experiencing one of the driest falls on record.
September saw just an inch and a half of rain in the city, and last month was even drier, with three weeks passing without any significant rainfall.
Since 1869, when records started being collected in Central Park, there has not been a full month that has gone without a measurable amount of rain. And on Oct. 29, there was a small rain reprieve, with 0.01 inches of water, or the minimum amount of measurable rain, recorded in Central Park. It makes October 2024 the driest calendar month on record, edging out June 1949, when New York got 0.02 inches
The lack of rain so far has also mostly been matched with a lack of fall-feeling weather. November kicked off with unseasonably warm weather, including on Election Day. Temperatures on Tuesday topped 70 degrees, making it one of the hottest election days on record. And it appears the warmer weather is here to stay.
According to a 30-day November forecast provided by the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, most of New York will face temps this month that are between 50% and 60% warmer than the average.
