A man in Ventura County allegedly slashed a police officer with a shard of glass while being confronted following a domestic dispute on Monday, according to prosecutors.
In a news release, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office said Lucio Sedeno, 34, has been charged after the incident that left an Oxnard police officer hospitalized.
Officers with the Oxnard Police Department responded to a reported family dispute on Monday. Upon arrival, they learned that Sedeno allegedly assaulted a family member and also had not complied with his sex offender requirements.
Sedeno walked away from officers and ignored directions. The officers followed and attempted to take him into custody.
At that point, prosecutors say, Sedeno used a large shard of glass to slash an officer in the neck.
At that point, officers took Sedeno into custody. The officer was treated at a local hospital, though the extent of his injuries was not made clear.
“This case underscores the dangers our law enforcement officers face in the line of duty,” said District Attorney Erik Nasarenko. “We will vigorously prosecute those who threaten our public safety officers and cause harm to members of our community.”
Sedeno appeared in court on Wednesday. He pleaded not guilty to the following charges: assault on a peace officer, resisting a peace officer causing serious bodily injury, and failure to update his annual sex offender registration.
His next court date was scheduled for April 18. Sedeno is being held on $80,000 bail.
