WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Vice President Kamala Harris presided over a joint session of Congress Monday where lawmakers voted to certify former president Donald Trump’s election. The certification was a stark contrast to the one on January 6, 2021, when rioters stormed the Capitol.
Despite a snowstorm, senators and representatives filled the House floor and certified the 2024 election results without issue.
With Inauguration Day two weeks away, Vice President Harris stood at the head of the House floor.
In less than an hour, the votes were counted.
On this January 6 many Democrats looked back to four years ago when rioters stormed the Capitol during this very process. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) says Democrats would not repeat history.
“On this January 6, our side will not engage in election denialism,” said Schumer.
President-elect Trump is considering pardons for those who breached the Capitol.
Michigan Republican Tom Barrett supports that.
“The privilege to pardon is one that rests entirely with the President of the United States,” said Barrett.
Massachusetts Democrat Jake Auchincloss says that should not happen.
“They should not get pardoned,” said Auchincloss.
With the certification complete, President-elect Donald Trump is set for his inauguration on January 20th.
