A HUGE new town has been announced as part of the Government’s landmark plans.

Manchester could see Victoria North transformed with 15,000 new homes built between Victoria Train Station and Queen’s Park in Collyhurst over the next fifteen years.

The proposals mark part of the Government’s landmark plans to build 12 new towns across England.

Plans to develop Victoria North could see the homes built in seven new and existing neighbourhoods across 155-hectares on “largely under-utilised and brownfield land”.

The proposed space for the new town where the developments are being ear-marked for would be around the size of 155 rugby pitches.

And the neighbourhood could also feature a stunning river city park with green space that would open up the River Irk.

Victoria North has already seen 430 homes completed, with 550 on site – while a further  4,801 have secured planning approval.

The area will also initially feature 258 affordable homes in the starting phases, with more planned to be delivered.

The regeneration project marks the largest in Manchester’s history.

Councillor Bev Craig, leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Having Government’s full backing to deliver the major Victoria North regeneration programme through the New Town Task Force is great news for Manchester – and a resounding endorsement for our vision for inclusive, sustainable growth, and a clear sign that this transformational project is a national priority. “

She described the development as “one of the largest and most ambitious programmes of regeneration in Europe“, adding that the area is “connected by excellent green spaces and a new 40hectare River City Park”

The development will also create “jobs and opportunities for our residents”, she said.

Bev continued: “We are already welcoming residents into the first completed homes, including the first of 130 social rent properties in Collyhurst, and this announcement gives us the key backing to crack on – and a vote of confidence that Manchester, along with our partners, can deliver once-in-a-generation regeneration at this scale.”

Labour announced 12 bids for new towns during their party conference last month.

Housing secretary Steve Reed launched the New Towns Unit, tasked with driving home ownership for young families.

Areas that are expected to see development begin before the next Parliament include Tempsford in Bedfordshire, Leeds South Bank development and Crews Hill in Enfield.

Other areas on the programme include Adlington, Cheshire East, Marlcombe, East Devon and Thamesmead, Greenwich.
