WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — As Hurricane Helene continues to strengthen, the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood advisory for several areas across D.C., Maryland and Virginia.
As of Thursday morning, the NWS upgraded Helene to a Category 2 hurricane. Officials said the hurricane is expected to bring a “catastrophic” storm surge with heavy rains and strong winds.
This will bring the chances for flooding impacting portions of DMV Friday into Saturday.
The NWS issued a coastal flood advisory for Washington, D.C. until 7 p.m. on Sept. 26. Officials said the flood watch will remain in effect until Saturday morning.
In Maryland, the flood advisory was issued for Calvert and Charles counties. It will remain in effect until 2 a.m. on Friday.
Lastly, in Virginia, the advisory was in effect for the following areas:
- Arlington
- Falls Church
- Alexandria
- Rappahannock County
- King George County
- Westmoreland County
