PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — A man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for a fatal stabbing that happened over two years ago in Oxon Hill.
Darryl Scottland, 32, will face life in prison, plus 23 years, for the attack that happened on Nov. 2, 2022, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy announced.
At around noon that day, Scottland went to Discount Tobacco at 4921 Indian Head Hwy. to sell a pair of headphones. 47-year-old Anthony Taylor Sr. was interested in buying them and went into the store to withdraw $200 from the ATM.
He gave Scottland $20 for the headphones.
While Taylor was looking away, Scottland took the remaining cash out of his pocket and fled.
Taylor began walking after him. That’s when officials said he stopped running, turned back, took a knife out from his pocket and stabbed Taylor in the neck.
He died in the parking lot.
Scottland was sentenced to life for first-degree felony murder, 20 years for first-degree assault and three years for possession of a dangerous weapon, making his total sentence life in prison, plus 23 years.
He was convicted on those charges back on Jan. 30, 2025.
Though we can’t bring Mr. Taylor back, this sentence brings closure to his family and loved ones,” said State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy. “It also ensures that Mr. Scottland is held accountable for his brutal actions against the victim. Our job is to secure justice for our victims and we did that in this case. I also want to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Haneen Daham for her hard work in securing justice with this strong sentence.”
