ROCKVILLE, Md. (DC News Now) — Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day, and with the November 5th election less than two months away, the City of Rockville’s leaders are encouraging people to register to vote.
“It’s very important that everybody has a voice in our democracy,” said Sarah Taylor-Ferrell, city clerk and director of town operations for the City of Rockville.
Taylor-Ferrell and other members of the City of Rockville’s Board of Supervisors of Elections plan to stand outside the Rockville Memorial Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., encouraging people to register to vote and update their information.
“[ We’re asking them] are they ready to vote and providing any resources and we’re hoping to get at 50 to 100 new registers,” said Taylor-Ferrell to DC News Now.
Emily Brown attended Tuesday’s event. She recently moved from New York and wanted to ensure she was registered in Maryland.
“It’s so important to vote; your vote counts, especially this year, so I wanted to make sure that I’ll be good on election,” said Brown.
The message on National Voter Registration Day is clear: registering to vote is easy. You just have to be 18 years old, a U.S. Citizen and a resident of the state where you are registering.
Grab a form and fill it out. Your voter card will be mailed to you if you’re eligible. For those that can’t register in person, Maryland, D.C. and Virginia also have online options.
Maryland’s Senate race is at the top of many voters’ minds. A recent poll by DC News Now, Emerson College and The Hill shows Maryland voters will most likely support Angela Alsobrooks over Larry Hogan.
“I know the best one will succeed. So far, they’re both very good, so I won’t go wrong with either choice,” said voter Rita Hatwell.
Interested voters have until mid-October to register to vote in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia.
