California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a man who was said to be hurling rocks at cars in Riverside County Monday evening, the agency announced.

CHP officers responded to Gilman Springs Road in San Jacinto just after 4:45 p.m. to investigate reports of a man throwing rocks at oncoming cars, and they found the man near Gilman Springs Road east of the 79 Freeway, the CHP said in a news release.

“CHP officers arrived on scene and attempted to contact the male subject who then began to throw rocks toward the CHP officers on scene,” the release added.

Despite the use of “verbal commands and non-deadly force options,” the man continued to approach officers, prompting at least one to open fire, according to the CHP.

The man was struck at least once and pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were hurt.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Public Information Officer Jonathan Torres at 951-846-5300 or after hours at 916-407-7511.
