THE China spy trial collapsed because of a “shambolic” evidence process, an investigation has found.

The Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS) slammed both the CPS and Government over “missed opportunities” to ensure it could be held.

Former parliamentary researcher Christopher Cash and teacher Christopher Berry, who deny wrongdoing, were accused of espionage.

But the charges were dropped in September with the CPS saying it could not get evidence from the Government referring to China as a threat to Britain’s national security.

The JCNSS denied that a “conspiracy” had led to the failure.

Chair of the Joint Committee, Matt Western MP, said: “We found no evidence of a co-ordinated effort to collapse or obstruct the prosecution.

All China spy questions come down to one – has Starmer told truth?

“However, we did find some decisions questionable, and some of the processes looked shambolic.

“The Government must show the public that it is confident in standing up to adversaries when required: failing to do so will corrode public trust in our institutions

A Government spokesman said it welcomed the report making clear claims of interference “were baseless and untrue”.

Meanwhile, a decision on China’s plans for a new super-embassy in London has been delayed until January, Downing Street confirmed last night.

China recently blasted Britain over fresh delays to its controversial “super embassy” – warning Starmer he faces “consequences” if the project is not approved soon.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said China expressed “grave concern and strong dissatisfaction” at the delay, adding the UK must “immediately fulfill its obligations and honour its commitments, otherwise the British side shall bear all consequences”
