Passengers had to be unloaded from a Red Line train and one was hospitalized after two cars became uncoupled Sunday afternoon.

A service alert from the Chicago Transit Authority indicated a mechanical problem on a southbound train at the Sheridan stop at approximately 3 p.m. After the cars became uncoupled between Wilson and Sheridan, the Chicago Fire Department responded to a call at the Wilson stop.

After checking passengers and transporting one to Weiss Memorial Hospital in serious condition, operations were turned back over to the CTA, according to a CFD spokesperson.

Shortly after 5 p.m., the CTA indicated indicated on X, (formerly Twitter) that while service had resumed, Red Line trains were running with residual delays.

In an emailed statement Sunday night, the media relations department at the CTA said the agency is still looking into details regarding the cause of the defect.
