(NewsNation) — Further details from the autopsies of the murdered University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin have been revealed.
The quartet was stabbed to death by Bryan Kohberger on Nov. 13, 2022, at an off-campus rental property in Moscow, Idaho. Kohberger pleaded guilty on July 2 and is serving a life sentence without parole inside the notorious J block of the Idaho Maximum Security Institution.
Hundreds of case files were released by police in July, with autopsy results included.
Chapin died of a stab wound under his left clavicle, which severed his subclavian vein and subclavian artery, and his jugular vein was severed, according to the documents. Kernodle was stabbed more than 50 times and suffered mostly defensive wounds, the report said. She died of a laceration in her right lung and two lacerations in her heart.
Mogen’s fatal injuries included a left lung laceration and a liver laceration. Goncalves was the only victim who suffered blunt force and asphyxial injuries in addition to sharp force wounds. She was stabbed more than 20 times, and her fatal injuries included a left lung laceration, a liver laceration, two subdural bleeds and a stab behind her clavicle, which cut her subclavian vein and artery.
People magazine obtained a recently unsealed supplemental filing from prosecutors, reporting this week that victims were stabbed more than 150 times total.
In the filing, Goncalves was stabbed at least 38 times, Mogen 28 times, Kernodle 67 times and Chapin 17 times. Per the autopsies, all but Kernodle were asleep or in bed when attacked, except for Kernodle, who fought back before her death.
