The woolly mammals made their way through the aisles, knocking over bottles and cereal boxes, before ending their shopping journey by queuing at the cash registers.

One man attempted to escape the herd by taking refuge on the top of a conveyor belt, as the ewes left a trail of poo droppings throughout the store, marking their path.

Staff tried to pull the wool over their own eyes, watching on as the bleating horde spent 20 minutes around the tills and rifling through confectionery shelves before seeing themselves out.

As they departed, the animals were filmed forming an orderly line, marching back through the sliding automatic doors into the carpark.

The video was filmed in the discount supermarket in the village of Burgsinn, Bavaria, showing the group of sheep that had taken a detour from their 500-strong herd.

The shepherd of the flock, Dieter Michler, believed one of his ewes saw a customer entering the store with a bag, potentially carrying food or salt.

He concluded that the curious animal decided to follow them into the store, which led the others to follow.

He told the Main-Post that he had been leading the flock along the path between the industrial area and the Sinn River, when the fifty sheep broke away.

Andreas Krämer, a spokesman for the Penny supermarket chain, said the store had been thoroughly cleaned following the invasion on Tuesday.

“For Penny, the impeccable quality of its products is clearly the top priority,” he told local media.

Kramer said that all the unpackaged grocery items had also been carefully checked.

He denied the initial reports that the shepherd had been made to cover the cleaning and breakage costs.

Kramer also insisted the incident had not been a staged PR stunt for the Penny chain.

The brand’s slogan is: “Let’s go to Penny first”, and has since been widely quoted online in comments under the video.

“It’s more along the lines of – that’s life,” he said.

One online commenter said the shop should have opened a separate register for the queuing sheep.

“They were better behaved than some two-legged shoppers when there’s a sale on,” another quipped.

It is unknown what the sheep were searching for in Penny’s.
