Billy Baldwin says he’s ending his decades long friendship with Robert Kennedy Jr. over the ex-White House hopeful’s support of former President Trump, blasting him for having “sold his political soul.”
“I have known Bobby Kennedy Jr. for decades. We were friends. I loved his politics. His speeches inspired me,” Baldwin wrote in a Sunday post on X.
Describing Kennedy as having “presidential ambitions his entire adult life,” Baldwin said the environmental attorney entered the 2024 White House race because he saw “the window of opportunity for his presidential aspirations closing.”
Kennedy, 70, announced last week that he was suspending his independent presidential campaign in swing states and throwing his support behind Trump. Kennedy said he would keep his name on the ballot in most red and blue states.
Baldwin, who starred in 1991’s “Backdraft” and is the younger brother of actor Alec Baldwin, ripped the son of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy for backing Trump.
“For him to end his pursuit of the presidency and endorse Trump is not only a betrayal of the values and traditions of the Kennedy family but it is also a cynical, hypocritical betrayal of his own political beliefs and personal feelings about Trump which have been publicly documented for years and years,” Baldwin wrote to his more than 250,000 X followers.
“His endorsement of Trump demonstrates his political cowardice,” Baldwin, 61, said.
A Kennedy representative didn’t immediately respond to ITK’s request for comment.
Noting a statement released last week following the Trump endorsement from five of Kennedy’s siblings that supported Vice President Harris’s White House bid and called their brother’s Trump endorsement a “betrayal of the values” held by their father and family, Baldwin said he was abandoning his relationship with the former presidential candidate.
“I too completely disavow and dissociate myself from Bobby Kennedy Jr.,” Baldwin said.
