A PIGLET has avoided the chop after escaping from a farm and crossing into a busy road — despite being blind.
Benny was rescued by a family who pulled over to investigate after seeing drivers swerving and hearing car horns beeping.
Lisa Hill and husband Simon, both 52 — who first thought a cat had caused the commotion — plucked him from the A614 at Farnsfield, Notts, before calling at local farms to see if the baby porker belonged to them.
Lisa said the couple called off their search and drove 15 miles to the Brinsley Rescue Centre, Notts, as the month-old piglet was becoming gravely ill.
Charity worker Lisa said: “He was so little and cute. We had to help and one way or another we knew he’d face death if he went back to his farm.”
Centre owner Jon Beresford said: “He was lifeless when they arrived and clearly had something wrong with his eyes.
“We put him in an incubator, provided hourly fluids and put him on antibiotics. He perked up and started taking milk.”
Benny, who will remain at the centre until he is adopted, had to have his eyes removed as one had an ulcer and the other a perforated cornea.
Vet Jonathan Hadley said: “He’s bounced back and once he finds his forever home he’ll live a normal and happy life.”
