A man and woman are fighting for their lives following a crash involving a wrong-way driver that left him and the couple’s baby dead in the Vermont Square neighborhood of Los Angeles Monday night.
The incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. as the family of three was traveling southbound on Western Avenue near 46th Street when police say a man in a stolen vehicle was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed and crossed over the center divider.
It was unclear what caused the suspect to lose control of his car but it slammed head-on into the family’s vehicle, leaving shattered glass and auto parts scattered in the street.
Police confirmed that a child in the victim’s vehicle who was less than a year old died at the scene. The parents, both believed to be in their 30s, were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The suspect in the stolen vehicle was ejected and also died at the scene. He was described only as a man in his 40s.
Police said they were not involved in a pursuit at the time of the crash and are continuing to search for witnesses and surveillance video.
