The officer in Bengaluru failed to recognise the superstar, 33, so unplugged his microphone as he was singing.
Ed was mid flow singing his huge hit Shape Of You when the officer walked over looking unimpressed.
A fan watching appeared to try to explain to him that it was Ed but he carried on anyway, unplugging the microphone socket at Ed’s feet.
Before Ed was seen telling the crowds on Church Street: ‘We were going to play more than one song, but we’re only allowed to play only one song, so hopefully that’s enough’.
Ed addressed the video on his Story on Sunday writing: ‘We had permission to busk btw, hence us playing in that exact spot, was planned out before, wasn’t just us randomly turning up.

Ed is currently in Bengaluru for a scheduled concert, and his spontaneous street performance was an unexpected treat for fans.
Despite the brief interruption, the singer’s presence on Church Street created a buzz among the city’s music lovers.
As part of his tour across India Ed will also perform in Pune, Shillong, and Delhi in February.
It comes after Ed continued to ditch his modern technology during a history-making tour of Bhutan, claiming he had thrown away his iPad in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
The English hitmaker became the first international artist to perform in the South Asian country last Friday as he wowed fans on stage in Thimphu.
Uploading some snaps from the series of concerts, the Perfect singer revealed he had reverted back to an old-school handheld camera and he looked like he was loving every minute of his tech detox.
He added the caption: ‘Got rid of my iPad and now I just walk around with a camera like it’s 1997. Here’s a dump of Bhutan trip.
‘Lots more camera guy dumps to come I promise.’

One video in the post showed Ed, who claimed to have given up his mobile phone in 2015, whipping out his black camera and taking a selfie in front of thousands of adoring fans.
The next snap displayed the end product of the old-fashioned technique, revealing the musician’s beaming face as his supporters in Bhutan cheered him on.
Trying out another method, one picture saw Ed pose for a mirror selfie with a friend during his tour of the country.
The Bad Habits singer donned an all-black ensemble, sporting a black waterproof over some black cargo pants.
Another video showed a behind-the-scenes insight into what the Changlimithang Stadium looked like in the run-up to one of his performances, while one photo simply featured a roaring camp fire.
A later selfie, presumably taken on his camera, was taken at a sharp angle showing Ed’s face from a much lower height as he huddled beneath a heat lamp.
The chart-topping singer previously explained the reason he ditched his phone a decade ago, detailing that he ‘just was losing real-life interaction, so I got rid of [my phone], I got an iPad, I moved everything onto email, which I reply to once a week’.
Last week he praised the ‘incredible’ fans who showed up to the unique concert in Bhutan.
He wrote on Instagram: ‘Had the honour to be the first ever international artist to play Bhutan last night. what a gig, what a country, what a beautiful place with incredible people.
‘Lemme know if i can move there, please and thank you.
‘And also thank you so much for welcoming me and my touring crew, and for every volunteer who helped put on such a historic show. hopefully see you again soon!’
The singer had been welcomed to the country by King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema.

He added: ‘I went for dinner with the king and queen yesterday and they said, “We just want people coming to the country that want to love and respect the country and understand the ideals”.
‘Yeah, I feel super honoured that I was chosen and I can’t wait to play. This is like such my jam.’
Last year, Ed was named the most played artist in the United Kingdom for the seventh year.
He has sold more than 150 million records across the world since his emergence with his debut album + in 2011.
