Police in Long Beach have arrested a man suspected of abusing a dog in a violent incident that was caught on video earlier this week.
Graphic surveillance footage of the Monday morning attack outside of 235 E. 12th Street was posted on Instagram by a nonprofit called Animal Hope and Wellness.
A man with a skateboard was seen lifting a medium-sized brown dog off the ground by the leash, yanking it over his shoulder, bodyslamming it to the ground, and kicking it.
Late Tuesday, detectives located and arrested the man believed to be responsible, the Long Beach Police Department shared on Facebook.
“This type of cruelty has no place in our community,” Police Chief Wally Hebeish said.
Police have not released the suspect’s identity or announced any charges.
“I want to thank our detectives and officers for their outstanding work in swiftly identifying and apprehending the suspect,” Hebeish said. “We recognize the deep concern this incident caused throughout our community and appreciate the public’s assistance in sharing critical information.”
The post also stated that the dog has been rescued and is in the care of Long Beach Animal Care Services.
PETA had announced a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the man’s arrest and information as to the whereabouts of the dog. It was unclear if anyone was eligible to claim the reward.
