An armed suspect was arrested for an assault that prompted the lockdown of a nearby middle school in Fontana Tuesday.

The suspect was identified as David Morris, 27, of Fontana, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

At around 1:16 p.m., deputies received reports of a man who was reportedly armed with a rifle and handgun and a female who was bleeding from the head on the 9400 block of Hemlock Avenue.

An officer with the Fontana Unified School District Police Department who was working across the street at Sequoia Middle School was also flagged down by a witness.

When the officer approached the man, he fled into a nearby home. As the school officer and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene, Sequoia Middle School was placed on lockdown for student safety.

The suspect was involved in a dispute with another man when he allegedly pointed his firearms at him and threatened to shoot, authorities said.

A nearby woman was struck in the head during the confrontation. She was transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.

Morris was eventually taken into custody. He was arrested for assault with a firearm, criminal threats, domestic violence, and possessing a firearm near school grounds.

Deputies also seized several firearms, including those used in the incident, from the scene.

“The Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the members of the community who immediately reported this incident and flagged down a nearby officer,” the sheriff’s department said. “Their actions greatly contributed to a successful outcome.”
