Another Ohio State basketball player has entered the transfer portal.
According to several reports, Meechie Johnson Jr. has concluded his time in Columbus and will seek a medical hardship after going into the transfer portal one more time and look to finish his college basketball career elsewhere. If you’ve followed the career arch of Johnson, you know that he is no stranger to all the comings and goings of the portal.
Johnson originally committed to Ohio State in the class of 2021, played his first two seasons in Columbus before entering the transfer portal for the first time, and ended up in South Carolina where he became one of their main options over the next two seasons. He led the Gamecocks in scoring, averaging 14.1 points per contest during the 2023-2024 season, but then entered the transfer portal again and found his way back to Ohio State this season.
Unfortunately, Johnson never really got his resurgence at OSU underway. He played in just ten games and left the team for personal reasons and never found his way back on the court. He recently shared that he was dealing with some mental health issues and had to step away from the game. Now, he’ll look to get a medical hardship and play one more season of college basketball, it just won’t be in the Scarlet and Gray barring a change of heart.
Johnson is the third Buckeye hoops player to enter the transfer portal since the conclusion of the season. Austin Parks and Evan Mahaffey have also entered the portal. Ohio State received good news from John Mobley Jr., and convinced Gabe Cupps of Indiana to join the program out of the transfer portal but still await word on others.
It’s that kind of offseason, and as the news continues, we’ll have it for you.
