Metropolitan Police made another arrest in connection with a deadly 2023 shooting outside a Northeast Washington nightclub that killed former Morgan State University basketball star Blake Bozeman and injured three others.
MPD announced Thursday that Frank Johnson Jr., 43, of Camp Springs was arrested Thursday by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. Johnson was taken to the MPD Homicide Branch and faces a first-degree murder while armed charge under a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant.
Johnson’s defense lawyer, David Akulian, did not immediately respond to a comment request left on his website’s contact form Monday morning.
The arrest follows the earlier apprehension of Cotey Wynn, 44, of Northeast Washington, who was taken into custody on March 11 and charged with the same offense.
Court records show that Antwan Shelton, one of the first two people arrested in the murder case, was exonerated in April. Shelton told FOX 5 after his release that he was not at the scene the night of the mass shooting and that he was working to “get his life back in order.”
The arrests stem from a shooting that occurred just before midnight on Sept. 23, 2023, at the Cru nightclub in the 1300 block of H Street, NE. First District officers responding to reports of gunfire found three men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
All four victims were taken to nearby hospitals. One victim, identified as Bozeman, 31, of Southeast Washington, was pronounced dead. The remaining victims were treated for their injuries and expected to survive.
Prosecutors previously confirmed that Wynn was employed at the time as a violence interrupter with the District’s Cure the Streets program, which works to prevent gun violence by mediating conflicts in high-risk communities. The Office of the Attorney General said it had no prior knowledge linking Wynn to the shooting.
Wynn had been featured in a 2020 OAG profile highlighting his anti-violence work. According to that profile, he previously survived being shot multiple times and served a prison sentence before joining the program.
Bozeman was a former basketball standout at Baltimore’s Morgan State, remembered by teammates and friends as a mentor and peacemaker. The university previously told 7News that Bozeman was active in community service, including volunteering with the Special Olympics and organizing events for children with special needs.
