Anne Hathaway, Liz Hurley and Anne Wintour were among stars, models and fashion royalty paying their respects to legendary fashion designer Valentino as he was laid to rest in Rome on Friday.

The designer, born Valentino Garavani, died peacefully at his Rome residence surrounded by loved one on January 19 at the age of 93.

Anne Hathaway, who attended with her husband Adam Shulman, first met Valentino in 2005 on the set of The Devil Wears Prada, in which the designer had a cameo alongside his life-long friend and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti.

She would go on to become one of Valentino’s many muses, regularly wearing his designs and vintages pieces on the red carpet.

Further guests attending the funeral at the Basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels and Martyrs in Rome included model and actress Liz Hurley and son Damien Hurley, as well as models Claudia Schiffer and Natalia Vodianova.

Also in attendance was former longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anne Wintour, who is said to have inspired the character of demanding fashion editor Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada, played by Meryl Streep.

Other attendees from the world of fashion included former longtime Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, U.S. designer Tom Ford and François Henri Pinault, CEO of the Kering fashion conglomerate which owns a 30% stake in Valentino with an option to buy it outright in 2027.

Born in the northern Italian town of Voghera in 1932, Valentino rose to become one of the world’s most famous fashion designers. Associated with a heightened sense of glamor and luxury, he dressed a host of rich and famous women including Jackie Onassis, Sharon Stone, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Barbra Streisand, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, and Monica Vitti.
