PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Angela Alsobrooks officially resigned as county executive on Monday as she prepares to head to the U.S. Senate.
Democrat Alsobrooks beat Republican opponent and former Maryland governor Larry Hogan in the election on Nov. 5.
Alsobrooks posted her letter of resignation on the X platform, stating: Thank you for your trust and partnership as we worked to build a stronger, united Prince George’s. Serving the residents of this County has been the honor of my lifetime, and I am deeply proud of all we have accomplished together.”
The resgination was official as of 10 a.m. Per the County Charter, Chief Administrative Officer Tara Jackson assumed the role of acting county executive.
Because Alsobrooks resigned by the first Monday in December, there will be a special election to fill the county executive role on a long-term basis. Had she not resigned by then, the county council would have appointed a council member to finish Alsobrooks’s term.
Alsobrooks was elected county executive in 2018, becoming the first woman and first Black woman to hold the position.
Shortly after Alsobrooks’ election to the U.S. Senate, Prince George’s County Council Chair Jolene Ivey told DC News Now she was interested in the county executive seat, stating, “there is nobody better to fill that role. And I know for the good of the county we are going to need someone who is going to focus on the needs of the county and who knows the county.”
Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy, who also stated she was eyeing the county executve seat, released a statement in November, saying, “I love this county – I grew up here, and I understand the needs of Prince Georgians – because I am one. I understand their needs for clean streets, trash pick-up twice a week, schools that are preparing our children for the workforce of tomorrow, integrating residents, business and labor to create a vision for advancing our county, and access to quality healthcare close to home… I believe that my demonstrated leadership qualifies me as the best potential candidate to lead and improve upon the quality of life in the place where I’ve called home for so many years, by putting the people of Prince George’s County FIRST.”
As of Monday, the name of Braveboy’s X account changed to “Aisha Braveboy 4 Exec.”
Braveboy, who succeeded Alsobrooks as state’s attorney, did not support Alsobrooks’ run for U.S. Senate, appearing in campaign commercials for U.S. Rep. David Trone who ran against Alsobrooks in the Democratic primary.
