An SUV belonging to the American National Red Cross was stolen earlier this week in the Illinois Medical District on the city’s Near West Side, according to police and Red Cross officials.
The 45-year-old Red Cross employee noticed the missing white 2019 Chevrolet Traverse between 4 and 5 p.m. in the 500 block of South Leavitt Street, according to a Chicago police report.
The employee reported that the vehicle was locked and that no key was present when it was stolen, according to the report.
In a written statement, a Red Cross Illinois spokesperson expressed gratitude to donors who provide vehicles “that enable our volunteers to reach families in crisis and provide comfort, care, and assistance after home fires and other emergencies.”
“We are working closely with local law enforcement and encourage anyone who may spot the vehicle to contact police. For everyone’s safety, we also gently remind the public to ask to see official Red Cross identification if approached by someone claiming to represent the Red Cross.”
Authorities had no description of the thief, but stated that the missing vehicle had an Illinois license plate BA34667.
The vehicle remained missing as of Wednesday evening, with no arrests as Belmont Area detectives continued their investigation.
