ARLINGTON, Va. (DC News Now) — The CEO of American Airlines, Robert Isom released a statement after a plane and military helicopter collided mid-air and crashed into the Potomac River Wednesday night.
Officials confirmed that the American Airlines plane, Flight 5342, was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members when it crashed and landed in the river. The military helicopter, Army UH-60 Black Hawk had three military members on board.
The flight departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was set to arrive at the Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA) Wednesday.
As of early Thursday morning, officials confirmed during a press conference that there were no survivors, and recovery efforts are underway.
In the video statement, Isom shared his “deep sorrow” for those involved.
“This is a difficult day for all of us at American Airlines. Our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, partners, first responders along with their families and loved ones,” said Isom.
Isom added that members of the airline’s go team will be traveling to D.C. and the American Airlines care team” has been activated to assist families.
“Anything we can do now we are doing and right now that means focusing on taking care of all passengers and crew involved as well as their families,” added Isom.
The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board and the United States Army.
