Amazon is set to begin testing its self-driving Zoox robotaxis in Los Angeles.
The expansion of operations to L.A. marks the robotaxi service’s sixth testing location in addition to the Bay Area, Las Vegas, Seattle, Austin and Miami.
Zoox will begin by deploying a small number of retrofitted test fleet vehicles equipped with safety drivers in a small area of the Los Angeles Metro area before starting autonomous driving later this summer, the Zoox website states.
“Our autonomous driving system adapts to the distinct conditions of the city, beginning within a specific geofence–the area where the robotaxi operates,” the website states. “Once we have met the safety requirements in that area, the geofence will expand.”
Zoox is preparing to welcome its first riders in Las Vegas and San Francisco later this year.
